Chandigarh: The Punjab government has suspended DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar. The Home Department took this action. DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar, DIG of the Ropar Range of the Punjab Police, was arrested by the CBI, Chandigarh, in Mohali on Thursday for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹8 lakh from a scrap dealer. Eight teams of the CBI, Chandigarh, raided seven locations in Ambala, Mohali, Chandigarh, and Ropar on Thursday. The CBI searched DIG Bhullar’s office, home, farmhouse, and other locations.
Seven and a half crore rupees in cash was recovered from DIG Bhullar’s Chandigarh residence. This cash was packed in three bags and a suitcase. Gold jewelry, 22 expensive watches, keys to bank lockers, and 40 liters of foreign liquor were also recovered. DIG Bhullar is a 2007 batch IPS officer. DIG Bhullar’s father, Mahal Singh Bhullar, was a former DGP of Punjab.
The middleman, Krishanu, confessed during CBI interrogation that he, at the DIG’s behest, would go to Mohali, Chandigarh, Panchkula, Derabassi, Zirakpur, Patiala, and many other places to collect money from high-profile individuals. The middleman revealed that for some time now, he had been collecting 5 to 7 lakh rupees from various individuals every month, at the DIG’s behest. Often, he was asked to deliver this amount within one and a half to two months. However, accepting a bribe of 8 lakh rupees from scrap dealer Akash Batta this time proved costly for both parties.
The investigation into the property documents recovered from the DIG’s home and premises could yield significant revelations. The CBI’s investigation into the benami properties mentioned in its official note could reveal significant names. The CBI is investigating how these benami properties were purchased and where the money came from. Furthermore, the diary recovered from the DIG has also brought several influential people under scrutiny.
